Giant tubeworms colonize a hydrothermal vent near the Galapagos Islands in the Pacific ocean. To find new sites, tubeworms send their babies scouting. They drift in the water looking for the warmth of a vent. Then they swim down, attach to the new vent, and start growing.

The dumbo octopus also lives nearby. It is a small creature with two fins near the top of its mantle, a large muscle behind its head where all its organs are located. The fins look like ears. Dumbo octopuses flap and wave their fins to hover above the ocean floor. When a tasty snail or worm comes near, the octopus drops onto it. The octopus eats the snail whole. Dumbo octopuses belong to the umbrella octopus family. Their arms are connected with a skirtlike piece of skin. They look like open umbrellas when floating. The dumbo octopus is the deepest-living octopus known to science.9
